Composite membrane of polyguanidine cationic surface for desalination

Abstract Surface positve-charged composite membranes were prepared through two guanidine group containing polymers, polyhexamethylene (PHMG) and biguanidine (PHMB). They used as aqueous phase monomers in an interfacial polymerization (IP) process reacting with trimesoyl chloride (TMC) on the surface of polysulfone (Psf) ultrafiltration membrane. Piperazine (PIP) provided best pH adjustment among chosen regulators. As groups dissociate water bring ammonium cations to membrane surfaces, both polyguanidine endowed reacted divalent metal better compared Na+ Li+. The rejection rates more than 90% for all salts. PHMG displayed excellent enrichment Li+ from a mixed solution Mg2+ Mg2+/Li+ mass ratio decreased 60 3.7, accompanying −3.6% Although partial participated IP reaction, bactericidal higher 99% Gram-negative E. coli Gram-positive S. aureus tests.
